On Saturday, the 10th annual Central Park skateboard race went down. Sponsored by the NY Longboard Association the event is a fucking trip and brings out an entire subculture that you would never know existed in NY. People even came in from other states and overseas for this shit! After congregating randomly by Columbus Circle, under the watchful eye of mad jakes no less, about 200 of us bombed the park's entire 6.2 mile circuit. Of course, we were repping Shut to the fullest but were also the only crew that decided to rock short decks instead of wile cruisers - kinda like bringing a knife to a gunfight. We mighta looked cooler, but we got our asses whipped on time. The fact that I bailed shirtless at about 40mph didn't help my finish either, although I got right back on that bitch and still made it in about 38 minutes. But considering the winner, and new record breaker, clocked in at 22 minutes, my time wasn't shit. Funniest moment was when, after I ate shit, some old bag about 4'11'' and 90 years old started yelling at me like "you're stupid, you're stupid!" and then to no one in particular, "look at this guy, he's bleeding all over, he's so crazy, he's so stupid!" If I wasn't so bummed that I smashed my ill Samsung NV11 I woulda tossed this lady in a ditch. So if any one wants to bless the Caranguejo with a new cam (same model preferably) that would be dope.

Ricky Powell: Illy Funksters

Last night Milk Gallery hosted a photo exhibition for Ricky Powell. Entitled "Illy Funksters," the show presented the definitive collection of Powell's works. From mind bogglingly dope pics of legends like The Beastie Boys and Run DMC in their heyday to raw unposed images of icons like Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Powell's photographs intimately and naturally capture an era of explosive creativity and artistic and musical innovation the likes of which will probably never be seen again.

The show started at 7pm and by 7:30 was already rammed out. While every event at Milk goes off, "Illy Funksters" was an extra special affair. There's perhaps no better way to personify the group of people that converged on the gallery other than in Ricky's own words. "This was amazing," he said while speaking with Milk's Rassi at the show's conclusion. "There was not one jerk off in the whole place. There was not one person that I looked up and saw and said 'aww man, this jerk off is here!'"

With wine, brews and vodka Red Bulls flowing and DJ Stretch Armstrong pumping pure bass like it was going out of style, "Illy Funksters" was easily the best event of its ilk this year. The Swatch TTR (which stands for Ticket To Ride) grand assembly hit NYC last week to politik on the state of competitive snowboarding's future. Led by the snowboarding legend Terje Haakonsen, TTR is a global series of contests that crown a male and female winner each year and blesses them with a boatload of cash. This year it was Kevin Pearce and Jamie Anderson taking the dough for the men and women respectively. To cap the whole thing off, TTR held a suare at the Swatch flagship store in Times Square. Why the hell do it there, you ask, well Swatch happens to be the major sponsor of the whole thing, so let them live a little. It was a good time. Peep the pics below.

I got the last minute call from Uncle Craig that the Nike Bridge Runners 125th anniversary run over the Brooklyn Bridge was going down, which was a good thing because I had totally spaced it. But after a mad dash to BK to grab my running shit, me and Craig were in Chinatown ready to rip. After copping our special edition Dry Fits with 125 on the back and an image of the bridge on the front, we were off. Even though it poured halfway through, the 100 or so of us had a sick ass time. After routing through Park Row to the bridge to DUMBO and up through Brooklyn Heights, we finished off at Cadman Plaza with some Grimaldi's pizza and the ill custom cake. Teaming with his longtime parceiro Gabriel Menezes, who just so happens to be the son of legendary Brasilian singer Jorge Ben, Iz We is a multimedia musical experiment designed to combine Baile Funk, Electro, Rock, and Hip Hop as well as number of other sonic influences to form an international movement all its own. Performing under the monikers Luke Skywalker and Gabezzz Boy, the duo will formally introduce Iz We this summer. However, there is a sneak peek available now on their myspace page. While there are no limits to the sound Iz We will produce, the group is operating under one unique guiding principal - they never plan to sell their music - it will always be available for free. During the tail end of the Golden Era of hip hop, the Lyricist Lounge Vol 1 double disc was released. Featuring everyone from the Liks to Common to Mos Def to Company Flow it was among the last releases to feature dope hip hop for hip hop's sake, and matched artists together that would never again be seen within the same context due to the impending divide between mainstream and underground hip hop. It's been ten years since true hip hop got lost in the shuffle and backpack and bling were positioned as polar opposites. However, all may not have been lost as there seems to be a recent shift back to originality and creativity in hip hop.

Marking the occasion is the long, long, long overdue debut album from Brooklyn Academy, Bored of Education. Since being featured on that fateful Lyricist Lounge album, Mr Metaphor, Pumpkinhead and Block McCloud have stayed true to their original sound and refused, perhaps even to their own person detriment, to conform to formulaic standards. But on July 22 2008, they'll finally have the chance to shine.

I lived in Park Slope for a long time and got to know Brooklyn Ac so to celebrate the upcoming release, which is being distributed through Caroline via a joint deal with K7 and Gold Dust Media, the homies invited me down to their listening party. It was a necessary breath of fresh air for someone struggling to stay in love with hip hop. Check some pics below.

On Wednesday night Rick Charnoski had his second dope jumpoff within the space of a week. After killing it with "Deathbowl to Downtown" he opened a gallery show at Elk in SoHo called Kitty Cats and Nuclear Energy Come Together. The Elk space is perfect and the neverending glasses of sangria would make even the worst art show fun. This show, however, was really fresh, lo fi, nostalgic and original. With the entire so called streetwear world's attention focused on Asia on some "Japan runs shit, Malaysia and Singapore are on the come up and China is about to take over," one particularly relevant nation seems to be continually overlooked. We're talking about Brasil. With 186 million people, it's the 5th most populous in the world. It's also the 5th biggest country on the globe in terms of land mass and the 4th biggest democracy for whatever that's worth.

Brasil is completely diverse, but not in the completely divided way shit is here. Blacks, asians, hispanics, and white people all get down and although its still mad gully in spots and they have one of the world's illest situations with regard to crooked cops, Brasil is inarguably one of the dopest places on earth.

And although Brasil is mad well known during World Cup years and for fly chicks and maybe a couple of skateboarders and Os Gemeos, as well as a shitload of good music, the country doesn't really have much of a direct link for conversation with the majority of the urban culture world. This is largely to blame on an English/Portuguese disconnect that keeps the information exchange moving slower than to other parts of the world where English is more well known. This is a tragedy since Brasilian people come from such a dichotomous madhouse of a country that they offer some of the most unique perspectives around. But the reason it exists is that Brasilians speak Portuguese proudly and honestly don't give a fuck about English. That and the fact that most people who speak English are too lazy to learn another language. But that just is what it is.

Enter Lucas Penido. Born in Belo Horizonte, Brasil's 3rd largest city, but raised predominantly in Queens and Manhattan, and currently bouncing between NYC, Florida, Sao Paulo, and Rio, Lucas is closing the gap between the streetwear, music and art worlds of Brasil and the rest of the globe. A year ago, Lucas began transmitting images and writeups on street culture products, people and happenings in Portuguese on something he named The Hype BR. Initially modeled after the English speaking world's well known hype blogs, Lucas immediately differentiated himself by reviewing products and penning editorials which assessed each subject from a particularly Brasilian point of view. This led quickly to the attention of Brasil's hype starved populace, who began devouring post after post. After only 12 months in existence The Hype BR is now seeing 6 figure unique visitors monthly and has become the most widely read blog of its kind in South America.

Although it was never the intent, Lucas is blowing up. He's been featured in Vogue Brasil, has an upcoming piece in the men's mag Trip and is quickly becoming the voice for Brasilian streetwear aficionados everywhere. No surprise then that The Cobra Snake caught him just recently at Sao Paulo Fashion Week. I caught up with Lucas at the Copacabana Grill in Astoria where we politiked over some Guarana amidst the din of the pay by weight buffet and a dining room full of Brasileiros. Here's a bit of what he had to say.

Deathbowl to Downtown

Last night there was an advance preview for the documentary film "Deathbowl to Downtown: The Evolution of Skateboarding in New York City." Held at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, this shit was the place to be. Everywhere you turned was another legendary figure in the history of NYC skate as well as the full crop of young rippers who are repping for the city today. Believe me, it was enough to make even the most jaded industry head gassed on the experience.

Directed by Coan "Buddy" Nichols and Rick Charnosky, and written by Jocko Weyland, "Deathbowl to Downtown" follows the history of skating in NY from the 70's until today through the eyes of the movement's major participants. Focusing heavily on the Zoo York and Shut crews, the flick is a necessary history lesson which hopefully won't be lost on the throngs of teenagers currently rushing into skate culture without a clue about where it came from.

Although underwritten predominantly by Mountain Dew, "Deathbowl" definitely did not come off as corporate propaganda and all that Pepsi money was clearly evident in the production value of the film - top fucking notch.

As this was a preview, there are likely to be changes to the film before it's final cut, most necessary is a bit more attention on the skaters who thrived during the early part of the 2000's - shouts to Rodney Torres!

Regardless, the theatre was alive with energy and with the exception of some boos when Chloe Sevigny's name came on screen listing her as the narrator, the film seemed to please everyone in the house.

However, if you can get past all the disgruntled strangers up in your face, there is usually some cool shit going on. Take this guy for instance:

He looks scary as hell, definitely the type of homeless dude you don't want to fuck with. However, I shit you not, this dude was more good spirited and articulate than almost everyone on the train. He was deftly moving about, smiling, complimenting people and just adding in every now and then that a donation would be appreciated. He had such a laid back approach and his speech patterns and mannerisms were so polished that it really made me think that maybe he was just rockin the "I just crawled out of the sewer" look for fun. Either way, he was cool as hell. I hit him up for a pic, he said hell yeah, gave me a pound and kept it moving. Priceless.

Commissioned for the branding agency MFA and entitled "Psychedelic Walk in the Park," the piece is ten feet wide and four feet tall and pops insanely like the gates to Imaginationland when seen in person. Speaking of drinking beers on the street... As part of their massive blitz for Grand Theft Auto 4, Rockstar games is going full tilt with their marketing. I went into a bodega for a beer at 3 in the morning the other night and the dude gave me a GTA4 branded paper bag to drink that shit in! Pure genious and unbelievable that no one had done it before (at least to my knowledge and I'm a pretty regular brown paper bag drinker.) To top it off, I went home to drink the beers and watch some South Park Studios and every episode is presented by GTA4. Companies take heed - this is marketing $ well spent.
